1804: First Free Black Republic in Haiti

Haitians overthrew the French government and became the first free black republic that permanently abolished slavery and the slave trade. This act was the catalyst for monumental change that inspired the movement for the abolition of slavery across the Americas.

Commentary
The liberation of Haiti was much talked about in Fitchburg and across the Americas. It inspired similar revolts elsewhere including in Paramaribo where Martin Becker lived. Often spelled Hayti or referred to as the West Indies, many articles on Haiti appeared in the Fitchburg Sentinel.
